We had been watching La Paz from a distance for years. The moment we read that Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez "the Aquarium of the World," and that you could swim alongside whale sharks in a protected, small-group setting, we were completely sold. We had visited Cabo San Lucas before and enjoyed it — but we were craving something rawer, quieter, and more wild.

La Paz delivered on every single promise. It has all of the laid-back Baja Mexico energy, stunning natural beauty, and warm, friendly Mexican culture — without a single mega-resort in sight. It's quieter, it's casual, and it might just be the most underrated destination in Mexico right now.

You Can Swim with Whale Sharks - Ethically and Up Close

This was our favorite thing about La Paz and why it was high on our travel bucket list to begin with. La Paz is one of the best places in the world to swim alongside whale sharks, and the experience is unlike anything we've ever done. From October through April, these gentle giants gather in the Bay of La Paz to feed on plankton, and small-group snorkel tours take you right into the water with them.

What sets La Paz apart from other whale shark destinations is how tightly regulated the experience is. Mexico's conservation agency controls the number of boats allowed in the zone and limits the number of swimmers, which means you're not surrounded by a crowd. It feels genuinely intimate. We went in late March (end of season) and still had an extraordinary encounter swimming alongside three Whale Sharks! Book early, go at the first opportunity, and prepare to be humbled.

Insider tip: The water in the bay can be cold, bring or rent a wetsuit even if you're a warm-water swimmer.

Snorkeling with Sea Lions at Isla Espíritu Santo

If the whale sharks are reason #1, the sea lions are a very close second. A day trip to Isla Espíritu Santo brings you to a protected UNESCO biosphere where a large, boisterous colony of California sea lions lives and they want to play. These are wild animals in their own environment, so you truly feel like you are visiting their house. They dive around you, swirl past your fins, and look you dead in the eye with tremendous curiosity.

The island itself is jaw-dropping: dramatic volcanic cliffs, electric-turquoise water, and virtually no other development in sight. This is nature completely on its own terms, and it feels like a privilege to be there.

The island is a protected biosphere reserve — leave nothing behind and soak in every second.

We took this tour and had a great time snorkeling with the sea lions, admiring the dramatic island cliffs, and making a stop on a secluded beach. Plus we even saw blue footed boobies. It felt like being back in the Galapagos!

It's Been Called the "Aquarium of the World"

The Sea of Cortez, which cradles La Paz, has some of the most concentrated and diverse marine life on the planet. Beyond whale sharks and sea lions, you might encounter manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and an extraordinary variety of tropical fish. We saw birds at nearly every turn, and the underwater world while snorkeling around Espíritu Santo was as colorful as any reef we've seen. Trust us the snorkeling is fantastic.

It's Nothing Like Cabo and That's Entirely the Point

We enjoyed Cabo, but it's a different universe. La Paz has explicitly chosen a different path: no mega-resorts, no nightclub strip, no cruise ship crowds. What it has instead is a genuine city with real neighborhoods, local life, and a pace that encourages you to slow down. It feels more authentic and is a much more laid back beach vibe.

La Paz doesn't want to be the next Cabo. It wants to stay exactly what it is, a place where people connect with nature, eat well, and embrace the casual Baja vibe. If you've done the Cabo trip and are ready for the real Baja, La Paz is calling.

Balandra Beach Is One of Mexico's Most Beautiful

Balandra is a protected natural area about 20 minutes from the city center, a calm, shallow bay with water so impossibly clear and turquoise it looks straight out of a postcard. Because it's a protected reserve, development is minimal and the environment is pristine. Balandra has luxurious white sand and small inlets throughout the bay. There are beautiful hikes for views over the beach and bay. Balandra lives up to its name.

⏰ Plan ahead: Since there are so few parking spots, be sure to arrive before 8am or after 3pm, or book a guided tour. We showed up at 9:30am and were turned away — Balandra has a capacity limit and fills up fast.

Ok… so this isn’t Balandra beach, but nearby El Tecolote Beach, which we highly recommend!

If you don’t want to worry about the parking situation we recommend booking this tour to focus on enjoying your time at the beach.

The Malecón Was Made for Slow Mornings and Golden Evenings

La Paz's waterfront boardwalk, the Malecón, stretches along the bay and is genuinely one of the most pleasant places we've wandered in Mexico. Early mornings bring locals jogging, cycling, and rollerblading with views of the bay. By evening it fills with families, couples, and street food vendors as the light turns gold over the water. There are plenty of small beaches, parks, and art along the boardwalk making it a really nice place to stroll or relax for a few hours.

Rent a bike, grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafés, and let a morning here set the tone for the whole trip. It's the kind of unhurried start that makes travel feel like travel again.

The Wildlife Calendar Is Extraordinary, Year-Round

Whale sharks get the headlines, but the marine wildlife calendar in the Sea of Cortez runs almost continuously. Humpback whales are present from November through mid-April. Blue whales pass through the deeper waters. Grey whales peak in February. Dolphins are frequent companions on any boat trip out of the bay.

You can kayak through mangroves, kiteboard on the open bay, mountain bike through the desert landscape, go sandboarding on the dunes, take a sport fishing charter, hike to scenic overlooks, or explore the cactus-dotted desert by ATV. La Paz sits at the intersection of desert and sea — two completely different adventure ecosystems in the same destination.

It Feels Safe, Relaxed, and Genuinely Welcoming

We rented a car and drove ourselves throughout the trip, through the city, out to beaches, along the coast, and never once felt unsafe or uncertain. La Paz has a calm, residential energy. People are warm without being performatively tourist-friendly. La Paz genuinely stands out for how at ease we felt from arrival to departure. The drive was really easy from the Cabo area and we would definitely do it again (although we would opt to fly into the La Paz airport to save some time). Walking around during the day and at night we felt completely at ease and safe, which makes La Paz such a great destination.

If you've hesitated about Mexico travel for safety reasons, La Paz is an excellent starting point or a reminder of what the country is actually like when you venture beyond the resort corridors.

The Food Scene Is Quietly Excellent

La Paz has a thriving food culture built on incredible fresh seafood, authentic Mexican flavors, and a growing wave of creative restaurants that wouldn't feel out of place in a major city. Ceviche, grilled fish tacos, and seafood tostadas are everywhere and genuinely good everywhere. The port area around Marina La Paz and downtown both have strong concentrations of restaurants worth exploring.

Some of our favorites were: Biznaga Restaurant, Majagua, Odayaka Sushi Bar, and DoceCuarenta Coffee and Bakery.

Pro tip: Make reservations at popular spots, especially on weekends. A few restaurants we wanted to try had long waits that caught us off guard.

The Art, Murals, and Downtown Energy Are Genuinely Charming

Downtown La Paz is a pleasure to wander. Colorful street art and large-scale murals appear on walls throughout the city. Shaded plazas offer quiet places to sit with a coffee or a paleta. The mix of colonial architecture, independent shops, and casual outdoor life gives the city a personality that's entirely its own. This is a city that actually lives not just a touristy city. We loved the authenticity.

U.S. News & World Report ranked La Paz as the 3rd best destination in Mexico for 2026, ahead of Oaxaca, Mérida, and Tulum. The travel world is quietly waking up to what La Paz has always been.
