A charming boutique hotel located across from Queen’s Beach and Kapiʻolani Park. We loved the peaceful vibe at the quieter end of Waikīkī, away from the bustle but still steps from the action. Bonus: great views of Diamond Head and a short walk to the zoo and beach. Ideal for budget-conscious travelers who still want the beachfront experience.

💰 Waikīkī Beach Marriott Resort & Spa
If you’re looking for resort-style amenities without breaking the bank, this is a great choice. Located behind Kuhio Beach Park (next to the famous Waikiki Beach), the resort features spacious rooms, two pools, restaurants, and even a Starbucks downstairs. We stayed here over July 4th and appreciated the convenience of onsite dining, shopping, and beach access just across the street.

💰 Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani
This serene, mid-range, boutique-style hotel is known for elegant interiors and a rooftop infinity pool. We stayed here on a mother-daughter trip and loved the new, modern decor, central location just off the main strip, and bakery next door. It’s a beautiful and restful retreat that still gives you easy access to all Waikīkī has to offer. This is nestled in my favorite corner of Waikiki - just a few minutes from the main drag without all of the crowds and noise. Walking to shops and restaurants are a breeze!

💎 The Royal Hawaiian Resort
Known as the "Pink Palace of the Pacific," this is a historic and iconic beachfront (high-end) hotel in the heart of Waikīkī. With its elegant Spanish-Moorish architecture and lush tropical gardens, it offers a timeless blend of luxury, charm, and unbeatable oceanfront views. The resort offers beach chair and umbrella rentals from reception for a fee and is located directly in front of the shopping mall with one of our favorite restaurants, Noi Thai.

💎 Ka La’i Waikiki Beach
This refined luxury hotel offers spacious suites, personalized service, and a perfect location just 1 block from the beach. We booked this for a short layover and were blown away by the large rooms, attentive staff, and fresh seafood at the onsite restaurant. It’s ideal for travelers wanting a sophisticated yet relaxed stay in the heart of Waikīkī. This is located in the same area as the Halepuna, 1 block back from the main drag, and a direct walk across the street to Fort DeRussy Beach (less packed than Waikiki Beach but only a 10 minute walk if you’d like to be closer to beach activities).

North Shore

Best for: Surf enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking a more local, laid-back pace

The North Shore is Oʻahu’s wild coast—home to world-famous surf breaks, roadside shrimp trucks, and peaceful nights under the stars. Stay here if you're seeking a slower rhythm and authentic island charm.

🌦️ Weather Tip: Winter months bring more rain (and bigger waves), but also incredible sunsets and lush greenery.

Don’t miss: Watching surfers tackle the Banzai Pipeline, visiting Waimea Valley, and exploring Haleʻiwa’s boutiques, Shave Ice, and art galleries.

An ideal spot for surfers, backpackers, and free spirits. This budget-friendly inn offers dorm beds, private studios, and rustic cabins just steps from Shark’s Cove (fantastic snorkeling area in shallow waters with a wonderful reef - unlike what the name infers). There’s a communal kitchen, snorkel rentals, and the kind of welcoming, community feel you can’t find at big resorts.

💰 Courtyard by Marriott Oʻahu North Shore
Clean, modern, and convenient, this hotel is located next to the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie. It’s great for families or couples looking for comfort in a quieter location. Very nice pool with a waterfall feature and the easy walk to local beaches perfect for turtle spotting and snorkeling. The wonderful Kahuku Food Trucks offer a wide variety of culinary options and only a quick 10 minute drive.

💎 Turtle Bay Resort (Ritz-Carlton)
This is North Shore luxury at its finest, offering oceanfront rooms, horseback riding, farm-to-table dining, and world-class golf. It feels like a private escape but is still close to nearby surf towns and trails. The sunsets here are unforgettable. You may even recognize the resort from movies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Including the Cowboy Luau offered on specific nights, there are 7 dining options on-site, 3 pools, and 7 beaches to choose from — some best for surf, swimming, snorkeling, or for simply basking in the sun.

Kailua & East Oahu

Best for: Families, couples, those seeking quiet beauty, stunning beaches, and wonderful hiking

Located on the windward side, Kailua offers a more residential, peaceful stay with access to some of the island’s most scenic spots. Expect quiet mornings, soft sandy beaches, and friendly local vibes.

🌤️ Weather Tip: More rain than Waikīkī, but often brief showers with sunny skies before and after.

Don’t miss: Lanikai Beach at sunrise, kayaking to the Mokulua Islands, and hiking the Pillbox Trail for panoramic views.

💎 The Kahala Hotel & Resort (East of Waikīkī)
This secluded luxury escape is nestled on a semi-private beach close to Diamond Head and 15 minutes from Waikīkī. We loved the lush, serene grounds, ocean-front breakfasts, and yoga under swaying palms. It's perfect for travelers wanting a refined, quiet stay with upscale dining and top-notch service. Check out the pool-side bar to enjoy lunch and drinks at the comfort of your lounge chairs at the pool or beach. There is a convenient car rental office in the hotel so we were able to explore for the last half of our stay. Bonus: The property includes a dolphin lagoon and marine education center. The resort was used as a filming location for the 2025 live-action Lilo & Stitch movie.

It is possible to get around without a car (we did for a few days). The hotel offers a shuttle to multiple shopping malls and stops in downtown Waikiki and you can take a quick Uber/Lyft ride over to Diamond Head Crater for variety.

Further east, Kailua is very residential, so most stays here are B&Bs or vacation rentals like this mid-high end Two-Bedroom House only a 3 minute walk to Kailua Beach Park.

Pro Tips for Booking Oahu Hotels

Book early, especially during high season (Nov–March for holiday season and whale watching and during the summer).
Look for breakfast included or offered activities like snorkeling or cultural experiences with your hotel stay for added value.
