How to Spend 48 Hours in Lucerne, Switzerland (with a Half-Day Trip to Mount Pilatus)
View of the Chapel Bridge in Lucerne
Lucerne is hands down one of our favorite towns in Switzerland and honestly, one of the most romantic cities in Europe. Picture a storybook Old Town wrapped around a glimmering lake, medieval towers rising above colorful facades, and snow-capped mountains framing it all in the distance. It really is that amazing.
There’s something magical about walking across Lucerne’s iconic covered wooden bridge, the Chapel Bridge, while the Reuss River flows beneath you and Mount Pilatus looms towering majestically in the background. As soon you arrive in Lucerne it feels like stepping into a postcard-perfect Swiss dream.
We’ve visited Lucerne three different times, and it never loses its charm. Whether you’re traveling through Switzerland by train or road-tripping through Europe, Lucerne absolutely deserves a spot on your itinerary.
While we have stayed in Lucerne twice (and we highly recommend it for your first time visiting), on our last trip, we based ourselves in Stansstad, a beautiful lakeside town just outside Lucerne and at the doorstep of Mount Pilatus. It was the perfect combination of peaceful waterfront vibes and easy access to one of Switzerland’s most stunning mountain excursions.
In this guide, we’ll show you exactly how to spend 48 hours in Lucerne, where to stay, what to eat, and how to add a half-day trip to Mount Pilatus for unforgettable alpine views.
Why Visit Lucerne, Switzerland?
Easy answer: for the romantic beauty. For a small Swiss town, Lucerne has a ton to offer for any type of adventurer. Whether you are solo traveling, traveling with your significant other, or spending some quality family time, Lucerne’s picturesque vibe will leave you feeling refreshed and happy. We loved the medieval architecture, the gorgeous churches, the serene river rolling past while wandering on the iconic covered bridge, and sitting outside on the promenade eating fondue. Come to Lucerne for the culture, the food, and the awe inspiring mountains. Plus, the surrounding area of Lucerne is absolutely beautiful. You can take a train up Mount Pilatus or Mount Rigi, explore the rivers and lakes by boat, hike or bike the alpine trails, or simply relax and enjoy the mountain air with a hot coffee or cold beer. It truly feels like a fairy tale.
Best Time to Visit Lucerne
May–September: Best weather, mountain access, and lake cruises - our personal favorite time
June–August: Peak season (book hotels early)!
December: Magical Christmas markets and winter scenery
We think the beginning of May to middle of October is the best time to visit Lucerne. Personally, we love visiting in the early summer when cool mornings give way to pleasant afternoons, however our second favorite time to visit is in early-autumn when the days are still warm but the nights and mornings give you the cool crisp alpine air. There truly is nothing like that fresh alpine air.
Expect temperatures in the Spring and May to be in the 60’s Fahrenheit (16-18 Celsius) on average with cooler mornings in the 50’s (12 Celsius or so) (although expect it to feel even colder).
Layers will be your best friend!
Expect temperatures in the Summer to be warm and nice in the high 70’s or low 80’s (25-28 Celsius) with mornings on the cooler side in the 60s (17 Celsius or so).
While we think May to October is the best time, visiting Switzerland in winter feels straight out of a movie. So, if you want snowy winter days, consider visiting from December to February, but dress warmly! With nearby ski slopes and winter activities, winter is a perfect time to ski and then enjoy a warm coffee by the river.
Things to Know Before You Go (Essential Travel Tips)
Getting Here:
You have a few options for getting to Lucerne, you can drive from many major European airports or take the train. If you are going directly to Lucerne, we recommend flying into Zurich. From Zurich, Lucerne is about a 45 minute drive or an hour and 30 minute train ride. Alternatively, you can fly into Bern, but expect a longer 2 hour+ train ride or about an hour and half drive to Lucerne. Lucerne is also accessible by train from other major European cities: 3 hours from Milan, 3.5 hours from Geneva, 4 hours from Stuttgart, or 5 hours from Munich). There are plenty of trains options.
We recommend booking your train tickets through Trainline.
Getting Around:
Lucerne is extremely walkable, especially the Old Town and lake promenade. For getting to Mount Pilatus and nearby villages, Switzerland’s trains, buses, boats, and cable cars are seamless and incredibly efficient. We typically enjoyed driving around (consider renting a car here), but honestly the Swiss public transit is fantastic so a car isn’t necessary unless you are planning on getting off the beaten path and exploring.
Weather & Packing:
Layers are essential—even in summer. Temperatures can change quickly, especially at higher elevations like Mount Pilatus.
Do I Need Cash?
Generally, no. Switzerland is very card-friendly, but it’s still helpful to carry some Swiss Francs (CHF) for small cafés or public restrooms.
Can I Drink the Water?
Yes—Swiss tap water is among the cleanest in the world. Bring a reusable water bottle.
SIM Cards & WiFi:
Free WiFi is common in hotels and cafés. For convenience, an eSIM (like Airalo) is a great option for Switzerland.
Restaurant Reservations:
During summer months, reservations are recommended, especially for fondue restaurants and lakeside dining, where popular ones can book up quickly.
Plug Type:
Type C & J (European standard). Bring a universal adapter.
Is the Swiss Travel Pass Worth It for Lucerne?
We think the Swiss Travel Pass is worth it IF you want flexibility and plan on using the Swiss public transit extensively. The value comes from being able to use the extensive train network. If you are planning on visiting for a few days (3-4) and are not planning on using public transit, then we would pass. If you want to explore outside of the immediate area, then it is completely worth it, plus you can receive discounts on many activities such as museums, cable cars (like Stanserhorn, as of this writing it does not include Mount Pilatus), and experiences. That being said, if you want a flexible pass for 3-days the cost is 289 CHF (roughly $370 as of this writing or 310 Euros). So if you aren’t planning on using public transit very much, it may not be worth the cost.

Half-Day Trip to Mount Pilatus (Must-Do Experience)
Why Visit Mount Pilatus?
Mount Pilatus delivers one of the most iconic Swiss experiences you can have in a single day. Towering peaks, shimmering lakes below, and endless alpine views—it’s Switzerland at its absolute best. You have a few options of getting to the peak, you can either take the cogwheel train, the cable car, or those looking for a workout, you can hike. If you do hike, expect the hike to take you anywhere between 3-5 hours depending on your fitness level and about 5,400 feet of elevation gain (1,600 meters+). This is definitely a full day experience if you are planning on hiking up Mount Pilatus. We recommend taking the cogwheel up, hiking around the summit, and then taking the cable car down.
We highly recommend taking the cogwheel train up and descending by cable car, creating a scenic loop that showcases the region from every angle. At the top, take one of the hiking trails (or two or three) grab a beer or coffee, sit on the observation deck, and simply take it all in.
It’s peaceful, dramatic, and unforgettable. The views across the landscape dotted with lakes is incredible.
Cogwheel Train vs Cable Car: Which Route Is Best?
Personally, we think doing both are best! The Cogwheel train offers scenic views as you travel up the mountain with mountain peaks towering over you and cows grazing as you make your way up the mountain. The journey takes about 30 minutes and is an incredible ride. Plus if you want to ride the steepest cogtrain in the world, this your opportunity! We highly recommend taking the Cogwheel up for incredible views.
Meanwhile, the Cable Car offers incredible views across the entire mountain range in large glass window cars. The ride is very smooth and has the best panoramic views. The trip takes roughly 40 minutes one way.
If you take both you get the experience of the Swiss train cutting through the mountains and then getting sweeping views while taking the cable car.
Important note: The Cogwheel train leaves from Alpnachstad, while the cable car leaves from Kriens. These two towns are on DIFFERENT sides of the mountain. If you choose to take the cogwheel up and the cable car down, you will be dropped off at a different location (an entirely different town). This is VERY important if you drive and park in one of the parking lots. If you took the train or bus from Lucerne, then this should have no impact on your travel plans (except being a little closer to Lucerne if you take the cable car down to Kriens). Now if you drove and need to get back to your car, you can take a 30 minute train back or take a 15 minute Uber or taxi. We would not recommend walking unless you want to hike around the mountain 8.7 mi (14 KM). We took the train back from Kriens to Alpnachstad (take the S5) and thought it was completely worth it; however if you are short on time AND drove, then we recommend choosing either the Cable Car or the Cogwheel.
Helpful Tip: Book your Mount Pilatus tickets in advance during summer to avoid long lines.
Honest Note: If the logistics sound like a pain to you, take this tour from Lucerne which will take care of everything for you, so you can focus on enjoying the views.
What to Pack for Lucerne & Mount Pilatus
Even in the Summer, the Alpine weather can change drastically between the morning, during the day, and into the evening. We recommend packing plenty of layers if you are traveling in the Spring or Fall (be sure to bundle up for winter and be prepared for snow!), and light layers in the summer. If you are going to the summit of Mount Pilatus, remember the Valley where Lucerne is can be quite warm (in the 70s and 80s (22 - 26 Celsius), while the summit can be in the 50s (10 Celsius or so).
Quick Packing List:
Travel Pants and Shorts
Hiking Sneakers or Boots if you plan to hike around Mount Pilatus or around other Swiss Alp Mountains. We like these Columbia hiking boots for men and Salomon boots for women
Lightweight Daypack – Perfect for carrying your camera, sunscreen, and snacks while exploring the islands.
Airalo eSIM – We used this for instant data access without swapping SIM cards (use code MATTHE6398 to get $3 off)
Travel Backpack for your carry-on. Ash got this specific one for her birthday and it fits so many things. It also comes with additional bags that are great for fitting shoes, laundry, etc.
We love our Samsonite luggage. We’ve had so many issues with fabric bags ripping or snagging over the years that we switched to the hard cover bags and have had no issues!
Packing Cubes - We don’t go on any trip without these. It helps divide out items by function and rolling and stashing items in these cubes allows for more room in your back for souvenirs.
